Art of the Beholder – New – Led Zeppelin’s Secret Weapon: John Paul Jones

Greetings,

In a two-part series, Novo and Philip (philipchurch.com) discuss Led Zeppelin’s secret weapon: bassist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and arranger John Paul Jones.

John Paul Jones, born John Baldwin in 1946, is a legendary British musician, composer, and producer best known as the bassist and keyboardist for Led Zeppelin. Before joining the band, Jones was already an accomplished session musician and arranger, working with a wide range of artists including Dusty Springfield, Donovan, and The Rolling Stones. His deep understanding of harmony, orchestration, and rhythm helped shape the distinctive sound of Led Zeppelin, contributing not just bass lines but also keyboard textures, mandolin parts, string arrangements, and more.

Throughout his time with Led Zeppelin (1968–1980), Jones was often the quiet force behind the band’s innovation, crafting complex arrangements on songs like “Kashmir,” “Trampled Under Foot,” and “No Quarter.” After the band’s breakup following drummer John Bonham’s death, Jones moved into solo work, film scoring, and collaborations across genres—ranging from avant-garde to classical to metal.

In the 2000s, he gained renewed attention as a member of the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, alongside Dave Grohl and Josh Homme. A true musical polymath, John Paul Jones remains one of rock music’s most versatile and influential figures, respected for his technical mastery, creative vision, and unassuming brilliance.
